I have a very interesting story to tell about having your mindset ready to handle unexpected wealth. I have a client who is 40 years old and he has been a very difficult case because he has, to this point, had his life the wrong way round. When he was 17 his grandfather gave him 2 million dollars, because he wanted to see him enjoy his wealth while he was alive. In his innocence the grandfather thought that he had made his grandson a wealthy man, but the truth is he had just made him a young man with money.

There is a difference, a person who obtains wealth usually has respect for the money, a person who is given money usually has no respect for it. Well obviously the boy had a great life(he thought) he got married, had 3 children bought fast cars, a big house had lots of hangers on and really thought that all was OK. UNTIL the money ran out. Now he was in a position that he had no money, and no idea how to obtain any from the position he was in. He started selling off his assets and borrowing money from people who still thought that he had money himself. Eventually he was totally broke and had to try and earn some money. The terrible thing is, that whatever he tried, he wanted instant results, he could only relate to the fact that he got amazing wealth immediately.

After a long period of about 10 years he finally went bankrupt to clear all the debt he had incurred trying to get a living.

It was at this point he came to me. The first thing I noticed was that he still had the mindset that things should just come to him without putting in any effort.

I am relaying this part of the story to illustrate that all we do is governed by what has happened in the past and the future will carry on pretty much the same unless you CHANGE your mind. It has taken well over a year to convince this guy that no one is going to come along and give him another fortune, all that time he had a little voice in his head that was saying, don't worry the next instalment is not far away.

It is interesting to note that what most people dream of, has totally ruined someones life, up to this point. What he had to do was be honest with himself and say that everything that had happened in the past were experiences and he could learn from each and every one. We often talk of the future, because the way the business is going, it will not be long before he finds himself with some serious money. The attitude of how he will handle it is very different, to how he has handled money in the past.
