Speak to your local vet, or dog rescue center -- tell them your individual requirements; see what kind of dogs your neighbors have -– they may have already done the groundwork; read up about specific breeds at your library or bookstore or on the internet; don't give in to what the kids want; be TOTALLY comfortable with your choice.

        While you're doing this research, make a note of any special equipment your chosen breed might need in terms of yard fencing, collars and leashing, toys, bedding, food etc. You should also be aware of any health problems your chosen breed is prone to developing in case this means you have to change your mind.
